How to save on summer travel
Summer is fast approaching, and with that comes planning for summer vacations. Summer can be an expensive time of year to travel, hotels book up quickly and flights rarely go on sale but with a little luck, there is still time to plan a last minute summer getaway without breaking the bank. Here are a few of my favorite summer budget travel tips:
1. Search for unusual accommodations
You know about Airbnb, but did you know you can actually stay in old fire lookouts? The Forest Service often has a wide variety of interesting accommodations that aren't just camping. We once stayed in a yurt for a steal on forest service land. If you are planning to try out Airbnb this summer, sign up here to save $40 on your first stay.
2. Use money saving apps and websites
If you are flexible with your dates, Groupon actually has tons of great vacations even in the summer. If you can't find what you want on Groupon, sites like Ebates can help you earn cash back for purchases on Priceline, Expedia, and other travel websites. Sign up for ebates using this link to receive $10 on your account.
3. Get off the beaten path.
Popular destinations like Disneyland or Hawaii can be really expensive over the summer. Instead, why not explore national parks or smaller less popular destinations. My number one recommendation for a small town budget destination is Guanajuato, Mexico. Located less than 4 hours from both Mexico City and Guadalajara which are pretty affordable cities to fly to.
4. Go on a roadside America tour of your own state
My husband and I LOVE weird and quirky Roadside America destinations. They have taken us many places and been some of our favorite memories, from the Muffler Men of Colorado to the Crystal Shrine Grotto in Memphis. We recently went on a little mini road trip to explore some of Utah's roadside America destinations and had an amazing time, I would highly recommend it!
