No Fear Year Week Two: Expertise
Okay so I realize that this title makes no sense but here is what I mean. I have many hobbies, talents, and skills and I love to talk about them. I love finding like minded people who get excited about the same thing. But also, I have a paralyzing fear of labeling myself as an expert. It makes me feel like some kind of fraud because really someone out there knows more than me about any given topic. It is a big part of the reason I have struggled with keeping up on this blog because I will come up with an idea and think to myself that someone else knows more or could present it better.
So I am often caught in a weird space where I love talking about topics that I know and understand but I am hesitant to own any knowledge or authority I have on a subject because all I can think is “what if someone realizes I don’t know as much as I think I do?” This is me owning that and trying to better recognize that while I don’t know EVERYTHING about every topic, I would like to consider myself someone who has some level of expertise in the following areas (in no particular order):
- Cooking/ baking
- Cake decorating
- Travel hacking (Travel rewards/ budget tips)
- Harry Potter
- The Office
- Amateur photography
- Adapting to new places
- Life long learning
- Self improvement
- Dystopian literature
While there are many things on this list I could arguably learn much more about, I am prepared to own the knowledge and interest in these general categories (as silly as some of them are). I hope to return to this list and continue adding things to it over time. I strive to learn enough to label myself an “expert” (with a lowercase ‘e’) and be able to speak confidently about those things even if someone else in the room may know more.
