Moving to Australia!
We’ve officially been in Sydney now for almost 3 weeks so I figure it is time to write about our move. If you’ve followed my blog you’ll know that the the process of moving was incredibly slow going. We spent almost a year waiting on visas from the time we learned we would be going and when our visas came through. While the wait was painful, it was so worth it and we are so happy to be here. Each step of the way it just never felt real: moving (moving again), buying plane tickets, packing our bags. I don’t think it actually felt real until about hour 11 of our 17 hour flight.
Our move started about 2 weeks before we actually arrived in Sydney. After moving out of our apartment we said goodbye to Major (or hedgehog) headed up to Salt Lake for the Qualtrics holiday party before heading up to Idaho for the weekend to catch up with family before we left. We said our final goodbyes and flew to Arkansas to catch up with the other half of our family for Christmas. Our Christmas was filled with making an absurd number of Christmas treats, eating said Christmas treats, and playing games. Finally on the 28th we boarded a flight from Little Rock to Houston where we caught our 17.5 hour flight to Sydney.
The flight to Sydney was painfully long. I alternated between naps, food, and movies. It didn’t really get too bad until the final 4 hours or so at which point I got a little stir crazy. Once we landed we navigated through customs (and discovered that Australia no longer uses passport stamps which is kind of a bummer). With our bags in hand we hopped in an Uber and made our way to our hotel.
After sleeping off some of our jet lag we ventured off to find some food, explore the area, and grab some groceries to prepare to move in the next day. It was a battle to stay up until 9 when we could finally justify going to bed. I still don’t know if Australia has turned us into morning people or if the jet lag still hasn’t worn off because most days I’m in bed by 9:30 and up by 5.
New Year’s Eve (day) we got moved into our apartment and went down town to watch the fireworks from the Qualtrics building. We got a pretty spectacular view of the show. The first set of fireworks go off at 9 PM (for the kids) before the main event at midnight. Staying up until midnight was a challenge and we made our way back home as soon as it ended. Somehow we were still up by 5 AM the next day. We made the most of Greg’s last day off before starting work and went to see Mary Poppins returns at a cool art deco theater nearby and settling into our place.
So that’s it for our move. We are SO excited to be here and see what the next year has to offer. Next up on the blog: our apartment.
